Labour and Lib-Dems come under fire for class size hypocrisy
Tuesday, 14 September 2010

SNP MSP for Glasgow, Bob Doris, has rounded on the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties for their condemnation of SNP moves to entrench lower class sizes in law - something the last Labour/ Lib Dem Executive failed to achieve. Education Secretary Michael Russell today confirmed that regulations to legally limit primary one class sizes at 25 will be laid in Parliament on Thursday. The move will make it illegal to have classes of over 25 in primary one and is part of an overall review of statutory maximum class sizes.

Mr Doris said: "This is complete hypocrisy from Labour and the Lib Dems. They had 8 years to do something about class sizes but did nothing. The only reason for their objection is political, because they know the SNP is delivering on class sizes.

“Labour's deceit knows no bounds. Labour have repeatedly refused to acknowledge the growing body of academic and educational expert opinion, that lower class sizes are of tremendous benefit. Labour led Glasgow City Council has presided over increased class sizes, the slashing of teacher numbers and the closure of 20 schools.

“The SNP will continue to push for progress on class sizes in the face of unprecedented UK spending cuts, cooked up by Labour and delivered by the Tories and Lib Dems.”
