Inspiring local students meet with minister
Wednesday, 14 December 2011

Bob Doris MSPSNP MSP Bob Doris tours North Glasgow College with Minister Alasdair Allan and praises the commitment of local students

MSP Bob Doris has met with local students from North Glasgow College.  During a visit with Alasdair Allan, Minister for Learning & Skills, Bob witnessed the outstanding work currently being undertaken by the students and staff at the Springburn campus. Bob Doris, MSP for Glasgow, said: "I was impressed by both the motivation and commitment of the young people I met during our visit.  They are a credit to themselves and to their communities – and I know the Minister agrees.  We witnessed a wide and varied range of useful learning within this wonderfully constructed college – from panel beating to MOT testing and from bricklaying to investigating the later artworks of Georges Seurat!

"In these tough economic times it is vital that we support and nurture our college sector, because Scotland’s future nurses, engineers and artists spring from this sector.  The Scottish Government understands the essential role colleges like North Glasgow play and I am delighted that the Minister agrees with me that any reorganisation of the college sector will continue to involve a crucial role for North Glasgow College, and will have the best interests of our students at its heart. That is why an additional £15million has been provided by the Scottish Government to colleges to assist any reform.”

Note:

North Glasgow College is one of the main providers of quality learning and teaching in Scotland.  Their vision is to provide learning opportunities to a wide range of learners, community, business and international; to be proactive in responding to external and internal needs; to provide progression/articulation through learning by acknowledging potential diverse clients and communities; to achieve and nurture potential which will lead to a Quality Experience for all stakeholders; to expand on current capacity, thereby achieving growth which is essential if the College is to meet the demands made by Government and the local and wider community.

Georges-Pierre was a French Post-Impressionist painter and draftsman. He is noted for his innovative use of drawing media and for devising a technique of painting known as pointillism
