Gray has to 'get real' about Labour's deplorable record in Glasgow
Tuesday, 16 November 2010

Bob Doris MSPCommenting on Iain Gray’s remarks to the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Glasgow SNP MSP Bob Doris said: “It is remarks like this that confirm Iain Gray isn’t fit for opposition, never mind government. If anyone has to ‘get’ anything then it is Iain Gray who has to get real about Labour’s deplorable record in Glasgow and throughout Scotland.

“The last Labour Government at Westminster imposed a £500 million cut to our budget, and set in train two-thirds of the £1.3 billion of cuts now being inflicted on Scotland by the Tory/LibDem UK administration.

“And it is Labour in Glasgow who want to push up the unfair council tax and introduce a new “basket of taxes” while the SNP works hard to protect household incomes.

“Labour made a mess of public finances and the UK economy now they want to do the same to Scotland.

“Instead of Labour's attempts to divide the country the SNP will continue to govern and to govern responsibly for the whole of Scotland.

“The reality is that, under an SNP Government, Glasgow receives the largest funding per head of any mainland local authority – some 25 per cent above the Scottish average – and over half of capital projects are in Glasgow or of benefit to the City, such as the new Southern General hospital and M74 extension.

“The SNP are strong right across Scotland, in both urban and rural areas, and the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Regeneration Fund invested in urban and rural areas alike – including specific projects in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling.

“And we are delivering key infrastructure improvements such as reduced rail journey times and more frequent services between Inverness and the central belt, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, and on the Glasgow-Edinburgh line, which will help strengthen local economies.”
