Glasgow MSP calls on British Government to return Scotland's £150million lottery money
Monday, 10 November 2008

Glasgow 2014 logoSpeaking from the launch of the Legacy Fund for Glasgow's Commonwealth Games today Bob Doris MSP said: "I welcome the launch of this Fund and hope as much cash as possible will go to build a lasting legacy for Glasgow and for Scotland. However this fund starts £150 million down due to Scottish Lottery money being diverted to subsidise London's Olympics.

"London is also raising money from designated Lottery games. London will meet its cash target from these Olympics-branded Lottery games quicker than expected. I want to see Glasgow Commonwealth Games-branded Lottery tickets and revenue raised go straight to Glasgow's games legacy.

"I know the SNP Government supports the call for Scotland's £150 million to be returned for Glasgow's Games. Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy must back our call to defend Scottish money and become Scotland's man in London rather than London Labour's man in Scotland."

The SNP MSP also encouraged local groups to apply to the Legacy Fund which is aimed at those least likely to participate in sport or physical activity eg older people, people with disabilities, those from ethnic minority group.

Mr Doris said today: "There is a fund of £500,000 available and I'd encourage all Glasgow groups to apply for the grants of up to £1000."

Note:

Bob Doris was speaking from Tollcross Leisure Centre where Stewart Maxwell MSP, Minister for Communities and Sport, was attending the launch of the Big Lottery Fund Glasgow 2014 Legacy.
