Glasgow's rogue factors given marching orders
Thursday, 03 March 2011

Bob Doris MSPThe Scottish Parliament has voted to introduce the Property Factors (Scotland) Bill, which will introduce a system of regulation for property factors. Glasgow's SNP MSP Bob Doris has been a key supporter of the Bill as it has gone through the parliamentary process. The Bill has received wide cross party support, which Mr Doris claimed was a brilliant example of the Parliament "working together for the good of Scotland."

Speaking at Holyrood tonight, Mr Doris said: "This Parliament works best when the parties come together and today we have achieved something extremely useful for householders in Scotland. Glasgow has long had a huge problem with rogue factors who treat their position as a license to print money and offer very little in return. Legitimate businesses know they have nothing to fear and they will today be rejoicing at our attempts to clean up the factoring sector.

"I commend the Evening Times and The Herald newspapers for their work in bringing the worst elements of the factoring sector into public view. Their reporting was used as committee evidence, illustrating widespread overcharging and allegations of intimidation and threats of bankruptcy for refusal to pay disputed bills.

"Homeowners will now be entitled by law to get resolution to disputes that have plagued them for years. It's time for all factors to look at their practices and to make sure that standards are raised across the sector. It's also time for the cowboys to simply leave.

"The situation was completely unacceptable and I am delighted that our parliament has taken decisive action today."
