SNP Member of the Scottish Parliament for Glasgow, Bob Doris, recently met with the new Scottish Government Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Keith Brown MSP, to discuss progress on Subway modernisation in Glasgow.
Mr Doris - a long time campaigner for Glasgow Subway modernisation - met last year with both the former Transport Minister, Stewart Stevenson, and the head of Glasgow Subway, David Wallace, to ensure partnership work was ongoing to support the Modernisation of Glasgow's Subway.
Speaking after his meeting with the new Transport Minister, SNP MSP for Glasgow, Bob Doris, said: "I had a productive meeting with the Minister and I am pleased that the case for modernising Glasgow's Subway has moved on to the next stage since I met with his predecessor.
"When I met with Stewart Stevenson in August 2010, the then Minister told me the target was for detailed proposals to be put before the Scottish Government by SPT by the end of 2010. I am glad that this has now happened. These proposals must now be thoroughly scrutinised but I am delighted that momentum continues to build towards modernisation. Indeed ongoing Scottish Government support is assisting SPT to refurbish stations and introduce integrated ticketing.
"I am confident subway modernisation will be secured as it is a vital part of existing transport infrastructure, not just to Glasgow and the West of Scotland, but to the entire nation. The Subway's future is crucial and we must take our time and get modernisation right - not just for getting Glaswegians around the city - but also for Glasgow to attract business as a top conference, retail and commercial centre.
"However modernisation must happen and I am delighted that the Scottish Government remain committed to supporting that. I was given every indication that progress remains on track.
"It is however important to take the appropriate time to get plans right. We only need to look how rushed opposition demands for a non essential project such as Edinburgh trams has led to chaos, delay and rocketing costs. As a Glasgow MSP, I will continue to champion essential Glasgow transport projects by working in partnership with both Government and SPT to ensure we get it right".
Following Bob Doris MSP's representations, Keith Brown MSP, Minister for Transport & Infrastructure said: "The Scottish Government reaffirms its commitment to helping make Subway modernisation happen. Good progress continues to be made with assurance of SPT's Business Case now complete. Ministers are now considering SPT's accompanying request for funding support.
"Meanwhile, the Scottish Government continues to provide capital funding to SPT, allowing them to proceed in 2011/12 with elements of the modernisation programme including the upgrading of Hillhead station and the introduction of improved ticketing infrastructure across the network."
