Bob Doris MSP has welcomed news that Maria Miller MP, UK Minister for Disabled People, is to visit MSPs at Holyrood on 22 October to discuss the Remploy situation. The UK Government is in the process of closing Remploy factories which currently employ disabled personnel in supported workplaces. The factory in Springburn is one of three in Scotland currently being considered for sale as a going concern.
Bob Doris, SNP MSP for Glasgow, said: “I welcome the minister’s decision to come north, particularly given the disastrous way the original closure announcement was handled. I also hope she will take the time to meet with some of the affected workers.
“I will be raising with Ms Miller the plight of Remploy Springburn, which I still very much believe to be a viable business. Bids are currently being invited to take over the site.
“It is vital that the minister understands the full impact of her Government’s decision. It was a cash-saving decision but an incredibly short-sighted one and it has caused incredible distress for Remploy employees and their families.
“I will continue to work constructively with the GMB union, Remploy workers and others who want to secure the future of the Springburn site.”
