Doris welcomes Scottish government funding for sustainable housing in north Glasgow
Thursday, 21 May 2009

Spiers Locks proposalsGlasgow MSP Bob Doris has today welcomed the announcement from Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Nicola Sturgeon MSP, that The Glasgow Canal Regeneration Partnership is to receive a share of £400,000 funding from the Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative (SSCI).

The Partnership which is building new homes at Maryhill Locks and Speirs Locks has been awarded funding as a design which will create buildings built to last, where high quality of life can be achieved and which demonstrate how we can reduce our ecological footprint.

Mr Doris said: "I congratulate the Glasgow Canal Regeneration Partnership for winning this funding from the Scottish Government for what is to be a low carbon community of the future.  The SSCI is an excellent initiative from the Scottish Government to help produce designs for the future today.

"For economic and social reasons it is imperative that we move to using more sustainable building methods and build estates that sit at one with their surroundings."

Mr Doris who today lodged a parliamentary motion supporting the move added: "These projects will bring the best in Scottish design innovation to deprived communities in Glasgow. We need homes that are cheap to heat, built to last and fit for families. Maryhill Locks and Speirs Locks have the potential to lead the way to a new generation of decent affordable social housing."
