Doris welcomes Scottish Cabinet to Royston
Monday, 29 June 2009

Scottish Ministers are getting ready for a summer of activity as the cabinet prepares to meet across Scotland during the summer recess. The decision follows the success of the tour last summer which saw the ministers meet in Dumfries, Inverness, Pitlochry and Skye.

Glasgow SNP MSP Bob Doris has welcomed the decision to hold a meeting on 1st September in Royston, Glasgow. The programme will form part of the "national conversation" public meeting circuit which will seek the views of citizens across Scotland.

Mr Doris said: "The tour is a clear effort from the Scottish Government to engage fully with civic Scotland. The contrast is clear between an embattled UK Government hiding in its bunker in London and an open and forward looking Scottish Government. Coming to Glasgow puts our city centre stage as our parliament marks the first 10 years.

"Ministers will be out and about meeting community groups as well as seeking views on the Scottish Government's National Conversation. The National Conversation looks at further empowering the Scottish people by giving our Parliament the powers required to tackle the major challenges we face.

"And unlike the Calman Commission we will also be able to discuss Independence, something the British parties have refused to do."

First Minister Alex Salmond said: "It is vital that we take government to the heart of our communities, discussing a range of issues – local and national - with members of the public right across Scotland.

"That is even more important this year, as we work together to fight recession.

"By holding events in community centres, universities, colleges, arts centres and a rugby club, this year's programme will take the ministerial team into the heart of communities in Dundee, Melrose, Aberdeen, Stornoway and Glasgow to hear the views and concerns of wider Scottish society."
