Doris echoes call for volunteers at Glasgow Memory Clinic
Friday, 16 December 2011

Bob Doris MSPBob Doris, SNP MSP for Glasgow, has visited the state of the art Glasgow Memory Clinic (GMC) to meet the staff and gain an insight into their cutting edge research into the treatment of Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

A private initiative, the Glasgow Memory Clinic conducts clinical research and trials exploring the treatment and control of various conditions.

Their research depends upon a throughput of willing volunteers, generally those who have Dementia or a similar condition and such volunteers are always at a premium.

As it stands, the Glasgow Memory Clinic cannot ask that those who have volunteered for other trials, for example through other healthcare bodies, are contacted to be made aware of the Memory Clinic’s research.

Mr Doris said: “The work carried out by the Glasgow Memory Clinic is at the cutting edge of medical research, however, they cannot conduct their trials without a continual flow of willing volunteers for what are generally simple, non-invasive tests which can themselves often be of help to the participants. That is why I am echoing the Clinic’s call for people, whether or not they have participated in something similar before, to get in contact with the team and see how they can get involved.

“It could just be that those who participate in the research will help to find a breakthrough in the treatment of dementia and similar conditions."
