Doris commends 'visionary' new apprentice scheme
Tuesday, 16 June 2009

apprenticeBob Doris, SNP MSP for Glasgow has hailed the Scottish Governments new "Adopt an Apprentice" scheme as a "visionary" approach that will help to create the jobs that will lead Scotland out of recession. The "Adopt an Apprentice" scheme is a Scotland wide initiative. Companies will be paid up to £2,000 if they choose to employ apprentices who have fallen victim to redundancy.

The scheme is intended to equip redundant workers with much needed skills, giving a boost to both individuals affected by unemployment and firms struggling to weather the economic downturn.

Bob Doris commented: "It is imperative that we plan for economic growth. The nation will need these skilled workers as we come out of recession and it is the action of responsible government that seeks to support apprenticeships at this time. Skilled apprentices will continue their training through this scheme, ensuring that the devastating effects of worklessness are minimised and that the nation has the skilled workforce we will need for future economic success.

"The scheme is open to individuals of all ages and business sectors. Older workers on apprenticeship schemes also need government help at this time.

"The SNP Scottish Government is taking every responsible measure at its' disposal to shorten the dole queue and help families and businesses through this tough recession."
