Doris and Grady hail amazing result in Glasgow
Monday, 08 June 2009
  • Worst result for Labour in Glasgow since elections to the European Parliament began in 1979
  • SNP win the popular vote in Scotland with 91,000 more votes than Labour

The SNP in Glasgow is in high spirits after a stunning success at the European polls. The party has won the popular vote in Scotland for only the second time, topping its performance at Holyrood in 2007.

Glasgow MSP Bob Doris has hailed the result as the all time greatest boost for the SNP in Glasgow. He commented: "For the SNP to have won the European vote in the Westminster parliamentary seats of Glasgow North and Glasgow South is something not many would have predicted only a few years ago.

"The truth is that from freezing council tax to cutting crime rates, the SNP have established sense and competence in government at the same time as New Labour have fallen apart amidst sleaze and disunity.

"We will take nothing for granted and we will work harder than ever over the coming months to win over the trust of more Glasgow voters. In Europe and at Westminster, in Holyrood and at the City Chambers, Glasgow is ready for new political leadership.”

Patrick Grady, who has been selected by the SNP to fight the Glasgow North seat at the next general election said: "After a round of disastrous school closures, Labour in Glasgow are now so out of touch with reality they think they can get away with anything. They have taken for granted the support of communities in Glasgow for generations.

"I will be working every day over the coming months to win the trust of the voters in Glasgow North so that this fantastic result is repeated at a general election.”

Mr Doris added: "I will be lending my support to Patrick Grady over the coming months. Glasgow North deserves first class political representation and I know that’s what Patrick has to offer."
