Following the announcement that Corus are to invest £8 million in their steelwork sites at Motherwell and Cambuslang, SNP MSP Bob Doris and local SNP Councillor for Cambuslang, Clare McColl, visited the site on Friday of last week (Friday 27 August) to see the expansion plans for themselves. The firm have announced the creation of 49 jobs at Clydebridge with further jobs anticipated as steel demand increases over the next few years.
Following the visit, Bob Doris MSP commented: "I was impressed by the commitment, knowledge and enthusiasm from both workers and management alike at Clydebridge. Together with their sister plant at Dalziel it seems these historic steelworks have a promising future. During the tour of the plant it was apparent that the facility has a strategic UK advantage in the production of strengthened steel and more importantly there is plenty of room for expansion. With thousands of jobs in the pipeline for renewable energy in Scotland, particularly once wind power is fully harnessed, steel for turbines will be a significant growth area."
Cllr Clare McColl said: "Steel at Clydebridge has been a traditional local industry for many years and it now has a bright future. The visit was wonderful and many constituents have already been in touch to ask me about the prospect of further jobs. This is a real success story for Cambuslang during these tough economic times."
Mr Doris added: "Clydebridge has the potential to be a major player in the renewables revolution and that means local jobs for Rutherglen and Cambuslang."
