City Council given opportunity to bring a school back to the Wyndford

Scottish Government Delivers Two Schools For Glasgow - Another On The Way

SNP MSP for Glasgow and schools campaigner Bob Doris has called for Labour run Glasgow City Council to replace the two primary schools that they recently closed in Wyndford, St Gregory's Primary and Wyndford Primary, with a brand new school funded by the Scottish Government.

The schools were subject to a heated campaign and occupation of the buildings by parents. Mr Doris backed their campaign to keep the schools open at the time and is now suggesting Scottish Government funding could be used to bring a new school back to the area. Following an answer by the Scottish Government today to his parliamentary question on the school building programme, Bob Doris MSP said:

"Congratulations to Garrowhill and Glendale Primary schools. This announcement is certainly excellent news for Glasgow. The city has not only been granted funds for the two schools they requested money for but Glasgow has also been asked by the Scottish Government to put in a bid for a third school.

"I urge Glasgow City Council to bring forward plans for a new school in Maryhill to serve those from the Wyndford area and beyond. The Council are currently looking at regenerating the area. Giving the community a school back would be the best way forward. There are plans for a family centre for Wyndford and I see no reason why a new school cannot form part of these plans.

“Glasgow City Council have closed our community's schools and the Scottish Government have given them the option of returning a school to the area. I supported the occupation of St Gregory's and Wyndford Primary during the school closure protests. Everyone was devastated when Labour closed their schools but now we have a way of providing a new school for the area. Its now time for the Council to step up to the plate."

Following on from my earlier announcement to Parliament (S3W-27721, answered on 28 September) I am pleased that all 32 councils will be benefiting from support for a school project as part of the first phase of the new school building programme. We have engaged with COSLA and individual councils to identify the 21 school projects and have used the same criteria for selection as were used for the first 14 secondary schools, based on information which councils have themselves provided. We have taken into account the distribution of needs throughout Scotland; the best available information about schools' condition and unsuitability to deliver the curriculum for excellence; additionality; and authorities' plans and priorities and readiness to proceed.
