New figures showing a breakthrough in treatment times for drugs and alcohol have been welcomed by SNP MSP for Glasgow and Deputy Convener of the Health Committee, Bob Doris.
 
Latest figures show 84 per cent of people in Scotland receiving their first treatment for drug or alcohol use had waited three weeks or less since their referral and half of those referred between April and June received treatment within a week.

Mr Doris said: "The figures show shorter waiting times for people needing treatment for drugs and alcohol, and this can only be a good thing.
 
"The SNP Government has continued to invest in and provide resources to NHS Boards to tackle drug use and to support the work of the new Alcohol and Drugs Partnerships.
 
"Funding for treatment has increased by 18 per cent in the last four years, bringing the total to £28 million as we invest in tackling addiction and supporting people to lead stable lives."
 
Mr Doris said the Scotland wide figures - which include Glasgow - show real improvement with Glasgow amongst those councils that has succeeded in ensuring 80% or more people receive treatment within three weeks.
 
He said: "The figures are testament to the hard working frontline NHS staff and the SNP Government's commitment to reaching the targets set out.
 
"Today's figures are good but there is always room for improvement.
 
"With a focus on local needs I am confident we can reach our targets across Scotland and make Scotland healthier."
