Bob welcomes Operation Reclaim in Milton
Tuesday, 10 July 2007

Glasgow SNP list MSP Bob Doris has warmly welcomed the rolling out of Strathclyde Polices "Operation Reclaim" across 5 areas in North Glasgow. Bob attended the first session at St Augustines playing fields and although the poor weather affected the turnout slightly, it did not dampen spirits. Encouragement was taken from the dozens of numbers who did turn up and the enthusiasm which was on show. He met with Constable Harry Faulds Strathclyde Police Asylum Liaison Officer who is responsible for the project.

Speaking at St Augustines Bob said:

"I'm greatly encouraged by this initiative.  The success that has already been had in Red Road and other areas suggests that Milton can benefit too"

"Kids are kids and if there is a ball and some mud then they won't let you down.  If you add a wider range of sports, some expert coaches and a bit of music then there is a carnival atmosphere and the whole community can come out and enjoy it."

"The highly visible Police presence also provides a feeling of security which has encouraged some locals to participate who might not otherwise have done so"

"It also allows Miltons youngsters to mix with the Police in a positive setting.  Fingers crossed for a bit of good weather and the community can make this work for themselves"

Constable Harry Faulds added:

"This operation has been a great success in other areas and I hope the good people of Milton will embrace it in the manner that other areas have.  It was a pity about the weather but the dozens that turned up made it a great start"

"You could see plenty of other interest from afar and once word gets about that the police are there to make it happen then I've every confidence that it will progress".

"The aim is to help youngsters integrate and we have evidence of gang fighting disappearing, enhanced asylum seeker relations and a significant reduction in crime in the target areas"

"If you give young people an opportunity to play with each other, the chances are they'll stop fighting with each other. I'm proud of this initiative and I hope we can attract the necessary funding to allow it to continue"
