Glasgow SNP MSP Bob Doris has today called for an urgent investigation into how a building collapsed in Glasgows West End. Mr Doris who visited the site this morning, has contacted the Scottish Government to try and ensure that any enquiry undertaken by Building control at Glasgow City Council is robust, transparent and retains community confidence.
Mr Doris said: "This was very nearly a tragedy and thanks are due to our emergency services for reacting so speedily and diligently. As usual, their selfless work prevented what could have been a disaster all round."
"There are now some vital questions that need to be answered by Glasgow City Council and Building Control at the council have the responsibility to conduct an immediate and wide ranging investigation into the collapse and I would urge them to leave no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of this."
"I have also contacted the relevant Scottish Minister, Stewart Stevenson, to ensure that the Scottish Government is satisfied that any enquiry is rigorous and robust."
"There may be interlinked planning issues here and it is vital that appropriate lessons are learned."
"There is a strong suspicion that the foundations that have been dug for a controversial gap site development beside the collapsed building may have been a factor. Any investigation into the collapsed building must include a full analysis of that development, a development that should now be halted immediately."
"I have also contacted the social work department of the council to ask questions of their emergency procedures for dealing with residents that have been displaced following such an event."
"When I called them at around 9am this morning they were unaware that there had been an incident and residents had to make their own accommodation arrangements last night."
"This morning some were back at the site with no idea about what they were going to do for accommodation, food, clothing or money. I believe contingencies have now been put in place but the council must respond far more effectively in the future." |
