Bob Doris MSP welcomes extra £1.5m for Glasgows Community and youth Groups
Monday, 18 February 2008

Glasgow MSP Bob Doris has warmly welcomed new figures which show that Scottish Government spending for deprived areas in Glasgow will rise by nearly £1million pound over 3 years.  £949,000 will be directed towards Community Regeneration, Working for Families, Community Voices, Financial Inclusions, Workforce plus and elements of Changing Children's Services and "More Choices, More Chances".

The Scottish Government have also announced that Young people in Glasgow are to benefit from a new £680,000 grant scheme for youth projects to be funded from the proceeds of crime. The latest strand of the Scottish Government's CashBack for Communities scheme will provide funding for projects which support young people involved, or at risk from violence, alcohol, drugs or antisocial behaviour as well as support for initiatives such as youth drop-in services and residential, environmental and outdoor activities including climbing walls, skate parks, mountain bikes and canoes and yachts. This will be administered by Youthlink.

Commenting Mr Doris said: "This is further good news for Glasgow.

"Nearly an extra million pounds will be going to some of the most vulnerable groups in our city.

"We must remember that none of the 7 funds that make up the new Fairer Scotland Fund were guaranteed a future under the last executive but this new £145m Fund is now guaranteed for the next 3 years.

"On top of that we have the £680,000 from proceeds of crime which will be targetted at Glasgow Youth Groups, we have the Government funded Council tax freeze and it is obvious that this SNP government is standing up for communities all over Glasgow.

"This should put an end to negative Labour scaremongering.

"I look forward to the money being used to achieve a fairer Glasgow and providing much needed stability to many worthwhile voluntary organisations."
