Bob Doris MSP welcomes First Minister's commitment to visit school closure parents
Thursday, 30 April 2009

Bob Doris MSP with parentsFollowing a letter from SNP MSP Bob Doris  which invited the First Minister to visit parents effected by Glasgow Labour's savage school closure programme; and a similar call by Robert Brown MSP at today's First Minister's Questions, Mr Salmond has agreed to meet parents.

Of the proposed meeting Mr Doris said: "This will lift the spirits of parents. Glasgow Labour may have forgotten our communities but the Scottish Government has not. I know that for reasons of procedure the Scottish Government has been restricted by what it can do about and what it can say on individual school closure proposals. However Alex Salmond's visit shows solidarity with Glasgow parents.

"I know Mr Brown specifically asked for the First Minister to visit Cadder. I welcome this. My invite extends to a wide group of parents including those that stay in my community, Wyndford, whose peaceful occupation of the local two primary schools I supported."

Notes:

1. Mr Doris wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Education on the 27th of April 2009 jointly with Anne McLaughlin MSP asking for the Cabinet Secretary and the First Minister to both visit.

2. Mr Brown asked the First Minister at FMQ's on 30 April 2009 and Mr Salmond confirmed he would meet parents.
