SNP MSP welcomes International Peace Day

Trident submarineOnly political power for Scotland will rid Scotland of nuclear weapons

The 30th anniversary of the United Nations International Day of Peace the Scottish Parliament was welcomed by Bill Kidd, SNP MSP, who tonight held a debate in the Scottish Parliament saying that Scotland has no reason or need for nuclear weapons.

Marking International Day of Peace Mr Kidd said: "We all know that here in Scotland there are nuclear weapons on the Clyde with the capacity to bring about the destruction of communities and cities.

"Trident nuclear missiles have been condemned as immoral by church leaders, illegal by chief judges and useless by senior military chiefs of staff.

"But guess what? It is deemed indispensable for our protection and safety by politicians at Westminster with a taste for sitting at the top table."

The long-time campaigner against nuclear weapons added: "We can do nothing at the moment to remove these hulks and their warheads but to protest against their presence in our midst - and we must do that.

"It is only with political power that we can ensure they go; lock stock and barrel."
