SNP MSP commetns on Calman pressure to ban Trident - Scottish Government committed to removal
Sunday, 21 September 2008

Trident submarine leaving FaslaneCommenting on calls for the Calman Commission to investigate ways of bringing weapons of mass destruction under Scottish control, Glasgow SNP MSP Bill Kidd said: "The Scottish Parliament does not want nuclear weapons and the Scottish people do not want nuclear weapons so all pressure to remove nuclear weapons from Scottish soil is welcome.

"The Scottish Government is deeply committed to ridding Scotland of these abhorrent munitions. How best to do so is a major part of the National Conversation. The Scottish Government has also convened a working group on a Scotland Without Nuclear Weapons which involves delegates from trade unions, the faith community and other representatives of civic society.

"In an independent Scotland, the Scottish Government would have the power to rid Scotland of these senseless and expensive weapons.

"Nearly £2 billion a year is being spent on the upkeep of nuclear weapons, with another £75 billion due to be spent on Trident’s replacement. That is money that could be put to better use in our society, our country or even supporting our under funded frontline troops."
