MSP expresses concern about nuclear sub safety
Tuesday, 03 June 2008

Glasgow SNP MSP Bill Kidd has expressed concern about the safety of nuclear submarines following newspaper revelations that a sentry aboard HMS Superb, based at Faslane, was discovered asleep at his post.

This revelation follows a report last week that HMS Superb  hit a rock in the northern Red Sea, damaging sonar equipment and forcing it to surface.

And in April it was reported that a hole was discovered in the hull of a decommissioned nuclear submarine berthed in the Firth of Forth.

Commenting Mr Kidd said: "These are extremely unsettling incidents. Taken in isolation these incidents could be seen as one-offs but to come so close together raises serious concern about the safety regime the MoD has in place.

"It is bad enough that Scotland is being used as a dumping ground for decommissioned radioactive hulks, but when active submarines from bases in Scotland are the focus of attention within the space of a week serious questions have to be asked of the MoD.

"This disturbing incident has exposed shortcomings in the running of nuclear submarines and perhaps the MoD should review how they are run to avoid such incidents in future.

"The SNP has long had concerns over the storing of nuclear submarines just down the river from Scotland's largest city.  These reports do nothing to lessen those concerns."
