Glasgow council pay rises 'unacceptable' - Labour threaten tax hike while wage bill soars
Sunday, 14 November 2010

Bill Kidd MSPPriorities 'all wrong' says SNP MSP

SNP MSP Bill Kidd has described Glasgow City Council as having the wrong priorities after reports revealed massive increases in the number of highly paid Glasgow City Council employees.

Glasgow City Council's Annual Audit 2009/10 shows that the number of Council employees earning more than £50,000 per year increased by 15% and those earning more than £80,000 rose by 32%.

Mr Kidd said it was "unacceptable" that Labour Council bosses were increasing wages for high earners while calling for tax rises which would hit ordinary Glaswegians hard.

Commenting, SNP MSP for Glasgow Bill Kidd said: "This is yet another example of Labour's financial incompetence. Labour simply are not up to the job.

"The City Council has its priorities all wrong. In recent years, Labour councillors have cut over 500 teaching jobs, shut down schools and slashed funding to voluntary groups. Now they are calling for a hike in council tax to fund the spiralling wage bill for top earners whilst they cut back services.

"It is simply unacceptable and the people of Glasgow deserve much better."
