Energy hotline can help during big freeze, says Bill Kidd
Wednesday, 08 December 2010

pensioner keeping warmBill Kidd, SNP MSP for the Glasgow region, has welcomed news that a Scottish Government hotline to help households winter-proof homes will be operating an extended hours service while the country remains in the grip of the biggest snow fall for over 40 years.

The Scottish Government's Home Energy Hotline on 0800 512 012 is now open on weekdays from 8am until 8pm and on Saturday between 9am and 5pm. Since the cold weather set in, the line has received around 1,500 calls a day.

Practical advice is available about keeping homes warm, avoiding frozen pipes, and steps to lower fuel bills. Households can also find out if they qualify for free or discounted insulation, more efficient heating, draught-proofing devices, cheaper fuel prices from existing suppliers and help to claim full pension and tax credit support.

Commenting, Bill Kidd MSP said: "Households are feeling the effects of freezing temperatures, and it's important that people have access to information about keeping their homes safe and warm during severe weather.

"It's good news that the Scottish Government has decided to extend the hours of the Home Energy Hotline to evenings and weekends so everyone can get help at a convenient time.

"Practical advice is available for everyone, including information on how to ensure they have the best tariff for their fuel supply.  People will also be assessed to see if they can benefit from support towards insulation measures or upgraded central heating.

"Anyone interested can call the Home Energy Hotline on 0800 012 512 or visit www.homeenergyscotland.org.uk"
