Bill Kidd MSP joins 'Wall of Life' campaign to boost organ donors
Monday, 20 July 2009

Bill Kidd, SNP MSP for Glasgow, has joined the Wall of Life campaign which has been established to raise awareness about, and encourage, organ donation across the UK. The “Wall of Life” is an online image which will be created through individuals uploading a picture of their face which will create a “mosaic” image of 60,000 photographs.

The 60,000 photographs will come together to create an image of two-year-old Louisa McGregor-Smith who received a heart transplant in 2007, when she was just five months old. For individuals to be able to upload their picture they must register or already be registered as an organ donor. It is then possible for individuals to upload their details and send a message of support if they so wish.

The campaign intends to raise awareness of organ donation and to increase the number of people signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register (ODR). It is hoped that individuals who upload their picture onto the Wall of Life will then pass the details onto their friends and family members by downloading a “widget” onto their social network pages and personal websites, spreading the campaign message even further.

Bill Kidd MSP who has previously supported organ donation, and who recently voted for “Presumed Consent” in a parliamentary vote, commented: “I believe the “Wall of Life” is an excellent campaign, and I am delighted to have added my support to it. Using innovative technology in such a way to raise awareness will no doubt create a substantial boost to the Organ Donor Register.

“I have uploaded my image and message of support, and I would encourage the people of Scotland to do the same.

“The SNP Government has created ambitious targets regarding organ donation. With pioneering campaigns such as the “Wall of Life”, I believe these targets can be met.

“With organ donation levels in Scotland already at a ten year high a great deal has already been achieved in a relatively short period of time, but getting the numbers up remains a priority. I would encourage people across Scotland, who are not already on the register, to take advantage of this opportunity and tale advantage of this easy method of registering. It only takes a few moments but it will make a huge difference to someone.”
