Anne McLaughlin, SNP MSP for the Glasgow region has today given a warm welcome to the announcement that Barclays are to create up to 600 new jobs in Glasgow.

Barclays’ Aurora premises in Glasgow are key to the firm’s expansion plans. This includes setting up a global shared services hub in Glasgow to support their investment banking and wealth management divisions. The move has been facilitated by the Scottish Government, Scottish Development International and Scottish Enterprise.

Ms McLaughlin said: “This is a great day for Glasgow and is a vote of confidence in the city from one of the country’s major banks. Scotland has long been a financial centre and Glasgow has been vital in establishing this reputation over the years.

“In the midst of the economic downturn such a significant number of jobs offer hope to those made redundant and looking for work. This can only be a good thing and the commitment Barclays is showing to Glasgow should be commended. Many Glaswegians are looking for work at the moment so these high-quality jobs are very welcome.

“Barclays determination to make their Aurora premises a centre of excellence has already shown their dedication to job creation in the City. This latest announcement is great for job seekers and great for the city, and really highlights the attraction of Glasgow for companies looking to invest.”
