Govanhill Baths Community Trust logoAnne McLaughlin MSP has welcomed the formal approval of planning permission for the development of a Health and Wellbeing Centre by the Glasgow City Council's Planning Committee.

Commenting, Ms McLaughlin said: "This approval is a huge victory for the Govanhill Baths Community Trust and the tireless campaigners who have fought to keep the baths open since 2001.

"Planning permission is not just symbolically important; it is a key to securing funding from major donors such as the Big Lottery Fund.

"The proposed Health And Wellbeing Centre will restore the Calder Street building, bring the three historic pools back into use, and provide a wealth of resources for healthy living to the diverse Govanhill community.

"This new stage in the life of the Govanhill Baths is an opportunity for members of the community to work with potential private and public donors to raise the funds necessary to bring these plans to fruition.
I encourage people to lend their support to the campaign by joining the Friends of the Govanhill Baths, by visiting the Trust's Calder Street charity shop, and by participating in the Baths' sponsored swim, the 'Million Metre Swim.'

"This success is just one step in a lengthy campaign that began with Save Our Pool campaigners occupying the Baths building for over 100 days in 2001. The campaigners who have worked so constantly over such a long period should be congratulated for their patience and commitment."
