MSP welcomes UK Recovery Walk
Anne McLaughlin MSP
Friday, 24 September 2010

Recovery WalkSNP MSP for Glasgow Anne McLaughlin is welcoming the 2010 UK Recovery Walk to Glasgow.

The event is being held at 2pm in Glasgow Green on Saturday 25 September to show that recovery from drug and addiction problems can and does happen.

People in recovery, their family and friends and service providers will gather in Glasgow to walk in solidarity and act as living proof that recovery is possible for everyone.

Speaking ahead of the weekend event, Ms McLaughlin said: "I am delighted to not only welcome this event to Glasgow, but to take part in it myself.

"Recovering from addiction problems is something that many addicts feel is beyond them so it's important that we join with those who have done just that, to demonstrate that it is possible. This event is about bringing people together who have been through the recovery process or are currently going through it. Sometimes just being able to speak to someone who knows what you're going through can make recovery that bit easier for people.

"So I would encourage anyone who can come along to do just that. This is an event for all the family and I'm positive that it will be a fantastic day all round."

The event begins at 2pm and involves a host of speakers, information stalls, entertainment and children’s activities. Minister for Community Safety, Fergus Ewing, will formally open the walk at 2.45pm when participants will take to the streets and walk a circular route back to Glasgow Green where more recovery celebrations will take place. As the day draws to a close at 6pm participants will be invited to take part in a mass release of balloons to symbolise recovery and remember those who have lost their lives to drug problems and addiction.
