Glasgow MSP welcomes investment in Govanhill
Anne McLaughlin MSP
Friday, 18 June 2010

Glasgow SNP MSP, Anne McLaughlin, has welcomed the announcement of investment in the Govanhill area by Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, today.

Ms Sturgeon announced a package of investment to address some of the problems that have been blighting the Govanhill community, including measures to tackle rogue landlords.  Plans for a specialist enforcement team with a remit to crack down on landlords that have been a significant source of the problems the area has faced were part of the investment package.

There are also plans to provide investment for the refurbishment of twelve backcourts, with opportunities of training and employment for local residents.

Anne McLaughlin said today: “Govanhill has been badly affected by bad landlords, who took no responsibility for what has always been a very vibrant community.  I know from my involvement with various local groups that there is still a great deal of community spirit in the area, which with this kind of support, can be revitalised.  This announcement of investment will help the residents take back their community and rebuild it.

“There are big challenges facing Govanhill, but I know there is good work being done and firm action on rogue landlords is exactly what is needed.  With additional money for refurbishment works, that will also offer opportunities to local people, this is a valuable step in the right direction for Govanhill.”
