Glasgow MSP and MP join forces to bring jobs to Glasgow
Thursday, 25 March 2010

SNP Parliamentarians Anne McLaughlin MSP and John Mason MP are joining forces in a campaign to bring new public sector jobs to Glasgow.

Following Jim Murphy's announcement that he wants to see at least 1000 of the 15000 civil service jobs being moved out of London to come to Scotland (as announced in yesterday's budget), Anne McLaughlin and John Mason said that they were keen for Glasgow to see its fair share of the jobs.

Commenting on the news, Ms McLaughlin said: "I think bringing 1500 of these jobs to Scotland would be a more representative share but however many it is, I want to make the case for Glasgow.

"Job creation is the number one issue that my constituents want me to be working on and I will fight hard to champion my city and bring jobs here.

"Given that not much has come out of yesterdays budget for Scotland, the least that the Chancellor can agree to is to bring some of these jobs to Scotland's largest city, a city of great talent, great skill and great people ready, willing and able to work.

"Along with John Mason MP I'll be writing to Jim Murphy and Alistair Darling urging them to add to the efforts of the Scottish Government in bringing some good news to the people of this great city."

John Mason, the SNP MP for the East End, added: "The SNP Scottish Government is doing all that it can to make Glasgow a better place. We are investing in housing, investing in apprenticeships and working to make our streets safer with extra police. In addition, Glasgow City Council gets £2,800 per resident from the SNP Scottish Government, while Edinburgh only gets £1,900.

"Jim Murphy let the Student Loans Company take jobs out of Glasgow without a word of protest. I'm calling on him to make amends. If the UK Government is relocating jobs to Scotland, it is essential that a major proportion of these posts are sent Glasgow's way."
