Brown visit undermines own 'anti-Glasgow' campaign
Anne McLaughlin MSP
Friday, 06 November 2009

North Glasgow CollegeSNP MSP Anne McLaughlin today said Gordon Brown' visit to North Glasgow college, was a welcome endorsement of SNP support for the college and for jobs and training in the city undermining Labour's "anti-glasgow" campaign.

Glasgow North East college is one of 9 colleges in the city receiving record levels of funding with over £8 million going into the college this year.

One of the first acts of the SNP in Government was to boost the colleges capital budget by £433,000 - nearly half a million pounds.

In addition the college has received a £13% increase in funding for student bursaries to help students struggling during the recession and over £8 million of support for this year alone.

And 700 HNC and HND students can benefit from the increase in student funding of up to £1,200.

Ms McLaughlin said: "Gordon Brown has undermined Labour's "anti-Glasgow" agenda in one step.

"In fact one of the first acts of the SNP in Government was to invest an additional £433,000 in Glasgow North College.

"Money that has been followed with a £2 million capital plan.

"And it's not just the college, but the students as well that are winning under the SNP with an increase in bursary funding for those finding it hard to fund their studies, money set aside for childcare and an increase in student support that will help 700 students at the college.

"While Labour argue about cutting budgets and slashing services the SNP has got our priorities right - investment in education, health and safer communities.

"The support from the SNP to Glasgow North College, and to John Wheatley College, both of which have been visited by David Kerr and education secretary Fiona Hyslop during this campaign demonstrates the SNP's commitment to education in this city.  One that is not matched by Labour."
