Anne McLaughlin MSP criticises 'appalling' detention of ten year old child
Anne McLaughlin MSP
Friday, 20 November 2009

SNP MSP for Glasgow Anne McLaughlin has visited her two constituents, Florence and Precious Mhango, who are currently being held at Dungavel detention centre. Ms McLaughlin later visited supporters of the mother and daughter in the Cranhill area of Glasgow, where Florence and Precious are residents and are actively involved a number of charitable and community projects.

Commenting on the situation, Ms McLaughlin said: "I was saddened and concerned to see that both Florence and her ten year old daughter Precious are deeply distressed and upset by their detention.  Not only are they terrified that they will be separated upon return to Malawi, they are also experiencing trauma due to flashbacks of the last time that they were detained.

"I am also shocked and appalled to learn that Precious’ father, from whom Florence separated due to domestic abuse, has been granted leave to remain in the United Kingdom and the right to work. I would ask the UK Border Agency why it feels comfortable admitting this man, who battered Florence and whose family is actively threatening to remove Precious from her mother’s care if they are sent to Malawi, when they are so determined to send a ten year old girl back into harm’s way?"

Notes:

1. Florence and Precious Mhango are involved in projects including the Cranhill Community Project and the café project at St Maria Goretti RC Church, which provides a space where pensioners can experience social interaction with young people.
