Anne McLaughlin MSP congratulates NHS chiefs on 'stunning' results
Wednesday, 24 March 2010

Anne McLaughlin MSPSNP MSP Anne McLaughlin today congratulated NHS staff at today's Public Audit Committee on what she described as some "stunning" achievements.

The Glasgow MSP spoke during an evidence session at the parliamentary committee which scrutinises public spending and performance, and noted some major developments that were contained in an Audit Scotland report.

Commenting on what she referred to as "the good news", Ms McLaughlin said: "It was refreshing to see one of our most valued public services have such great improvements under its belt.

"The NHS in Scotland have managed to meet their efficiency savings targets, without cutting front line services. We've seen a reduction in death rates from cancer, heart disease, stroke, aids and suicide. Waiting times have come down and hidden waiting lists have gone all together which, in itself, is a remarkable achievement.

"At the Public Audit Committee today I found myself agreeing with the Chief Executive of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Robert Calderwood, when he said, with reference to waiting times, that the NHS in Scotland was "unrecognisable" from what we had at the start of the decade.

"Despite some serious challenges, NHS staff can be proud of themselves and these results. My parents were both nurses so I know how hard they work and will always champion NHS staff but I genuinely offer my warmest congratulations to each and every one of them."
