SNP hit out at 'benefits yo-yo' - Labour making it even harder to make ends meet
John Mason MP
Thursday, 10 December 2009

SNP Work and Pensions Spokesperson John Mason MP has hit out at the UK Government after it emerged child benefit and disability payments will be raised within weeks of the General Election – then slashed a year later.

Speaking after the House of Commons statement on the matter today (Thursday), Mr Mason pressed the Minister to reconsider the support provided for full time carers – noting that Carer’s Allowance was very low.

Commenting, Mr Mason said: “Ending poverty in the UK needs a long term and well considered solution. This benefits yo-yo is designed to boost Labour popularity but will do nothing to help the very poorest in society make ends meet through the Downing Street downturn.

“This is a cynical move which confirms the Chancellor didn’t deliver a Pre-Budget statement, he delivered a Pre-Election statement."

Mr Mason then went on to express concern over Carer’s Allowance: “Across Scotland, thousands of people provide priceless support to families and friends who can’t take care of themselves - but the UK Government is letting them down with woefully inadequate financial support.”
