East End MP highlights Parkhead Fire Station issue at Westminster
John Mason MP
Thursday, 26 February 2009

John Mason with FBU membersMason asks whether closure decision took account of Commonwealth Games

The MP for Glasgow East, John Mason, has tabled a motion at the House of Commons calling on Strathclyde Fire & Rescue to reconsider their decision on the closure of Parkhead Fire Station.

The local Scottish National Party MP believes that the closure decision may not have taken sufficient account of the fact that the inner East End is due to play host to the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Commenting earlier today, John Mason said: "I am concerned that the decision taken did not take sufficient account of the Commonwealth Games, and the existing and planned development associated with it.

"Given that Parkhead, Tollcross and Braidfauld are set to be playing host to much of the world in a few years time, many people would ask whether it is sensible to make decisions that will lead to increases response times in that area."

Note:

The text of the Early Day Motion (EDM) is as follows:

EDM 843 - Closure of Parkhead Fire Station - That this House notes with concern the recent decision by the Board of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue to close Parkhead Fire Station in Glasgow; further notes that, in the Glasgow districts of Parkhead, Braidfauld and Tollcross, this will lead to average attendance times increasing from four minutes to around eight minutes; further notes that this area will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014; and urges the Board of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue to reconsider this decision.
