SNP Government "on your side" in Glasgow
Here are only some of the projects delivered or coming up in Glasgow by the SNP Government, as well as information on inward investment announcements since 2007, creating jobs in Glasgow.
HOUSING AND REGENERATION
- Provided £84m to fund new affordable housing through Glasgow City Council allowing the approval of 1,450 new homes during 2008/9.
- Provided a further £79.3m to support Glasgow Housing Association including funding to allow the approval of an additional 442 new affordable homes.
- Supported the successful completion of the first 4 second stage transfers of houses from Glasgow Housing Association to local community based housing associations.
- Allocated £62 million (2007-11) to Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company (URC). Clyde Gateway is one of Scotland’s most significant regeneration projects, and the URC will lead on its delivery.
- The Fairer Scotland Fund (FSF) has provided Glasgow Community Planning Partnerships with £154.474m (2008/2011 ) to work together to tackle area based and individual poverty and to help more people access and sustain employment.
- In 2008/09 the partnership used these resources to support a variety of services and projects such as £4.4m for the “Glasgow Works” employability programme, £2.5m to address the needs of vulnerable children and £1.9m to support community policing.
POLICE & COMMUNITY SAFETY

In Strathclyde police officer numbers have increased to 7,955 – a record high under the SNP.

Unprecedented police numbers in Strathclyde have allowed Chief Constable Stephen House to develop a robust community policing model. The number of people engaged in community policing in Strathclyde will rise from 527 last year to 1,127 by the end of March 2009.

The SNP Government has provided £1.6m to support the £5m CIRV (Community Initiative to Reduce Violence) project, which will tackle gang violence/knife crime in Glasgow’s East End, targetting 55 gangs and over 700 young men.

For 2008/09, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde received £8,422,000 for tackling drug misuse.
INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
M74

The M74 Completion project will be a new 8km (5m) stretch of motorway joining the M74 at Fullarton Road junction, near Carmyle to the M8 motorway west of Kingston Bridge near Glasgow City Centre.

Construction work began on the new stretch of road in May 2008 and is progressing well. The new stretch of road is expected to be completed in 2011.

Costs - £200m already spent, £445m fixed construction cost and £12m for grouting, utilities etc.
M80
- The project will involve the construction of a new 11 mile (18km) stretch of the A80 in Central Scotland and will cost £300 million.
Glasgow Fastlink
- The Scottish Government will provide funding for Fastlink, a key Glasgow local transport project which will provide rapid bus transit services linking the city centre, the SECC and the new Southern General Hospital. This will ensure better transport links within the city in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
HEALTH AND WELLBEING

A new Southern General Hospital - the total cost is £842m - £552 million of which is coming directly from the SNP Government, with other funding through NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Keep Well - The Scottish Government funds the Glasgow Centre for Population Health (£1million per annum). The Centre is a partnership between NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Glasgow City Council and the University of Glasgow, to provide a focus for building understanding and fresh thinking about approaches that might be effective in addressing Glasgow’s health inequalities.

The Scottish Government supported the development of Scotland’s first sexual assault referral centre – Archway Glasgow (£500k per annum). Archway Glasgow is an integrated service providing medical, forensic and emotional support to victims of rape and sexual assault in Glasgow, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
COMMONWEALTH GAMES
- Through our support for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games the Scottish Government is:

Meeting 80% (£238m) of the public cost of delivering the Games (building on the 50% contribution to the cost of Glasgow's successful bid for the Commonwealth Games).

Contributing towards around £2 billion of infrastructure projects that would not be happening without the impetus of the Games; including the M74 extension and the East End Regeneration Route, the National Indoor Sports Arena and Velodrome, the SECC Arena and the Games Village - a key element of the regeneration of the East End of Glasgow.

Supporting the estimated 1000 new jobs in the Glasgow area that will be created as a direct result of the Games.

Helping to capture the estimated net economic benefits of £26 million for the Glasgow area from the Games.

Putting in place ambitious legacy programmes around transport, business, health, business, tourism, learning, volunteering and the environment that will benefit Glasgow enormously.
LIFELONG LEARNING & EDUCATION

A comprehensive programme of college redevelopment at Langside, Anniesland and North Glasgow Colleges.

Nearly one-third (31.25%) of all the Funding Council's capital spend in 2007-08 by universities and colleges went to Glasgow.

Through funding from the Scottish Government, LTS (Learning & Teaching Scotland) have provided £10k to Glasgow City Council to set up a Confucius Classroom based at Hillhead High School. This matches a further £10k to be provided by the Hanban, which is part of the Ministry of Education in China. The Glasgow Confucius Classroom was launched by Adam Ingram on 27 February 2009 and will see Scots school pupils learn about the Chinese language and culture.

Glasgow will receive over £300m capital support over the two year period 2008-10 to invest in all categories of infrastructure, including schools.

Pupils in Glasgow benefited from the SNP Government’s policy of free school meals – taking part in last years pilot and due to receive free school meals in P1-P3 form next year.

In July 2007, US bank Morgan Stanley announced plans to create 600 new

jobs in Glasgow in addition to the 770 staff the company already employs in the city.

In August 2007, Homeloan Management Limited (HML), part of the UK owned

Skipton Building Society Group announced that it will create up to 425 new jobs in Glasgow to meet increasing demand for the company's mortgage administration services.

In August 2007, Danish headquartered Shell announced a further expansion of its financial shared service operation in Glasgow which already has 500 employees, creating up to 150 accountancy jobs.

In November 2007 the First Minister officially opened Barclays Wealth’s new premises in the Aurora building in Glasgow. The UK headquartered company expects to create 500 new jobs at its new premises.

In November 2007, UK headquartered contract clinical research services company ClinTec International, announced that it is to locate its new global corporate headquarters in Glasgow, creating up to 240 new jobs over the next three years.

On 19 November 2008, Mailway Scotland announced the creation of 40 new jobs at Hillington. This new company has been formed as a joint venture between Yorkshire-based Mailway Packaging Solutions and Benchmark Promotional Support Services. The new packaging facility at Hillington, due to be operational in early 2009, will cater mainly for the whisky industry.

On 15 January 2009, The Clydesdale Bank announced 23 new jobs in Glasgow and Clydebank. This is part of a restructuring program for the bank which is owned by the National Australia Group.

On 18 February 2009, internet and telephone based insurance company esure announced plans to create 500 new jobs over the next five years.

On 11 March 2009, French technology company Altran CIS announced that it is to establish a new £2 million Projects Solutions Centre in Glasgow. The centre will initially have 20 employees. However, Altran has ambitions to grow this to 200 over the next five years. The project is supported by an RSA grant of £250,000.
