At the full Council meeting on Thursday 2nd the SNP put forward a motion calling on the Council to encourage members of all the faith communities to dress in whatever manner they deem appropriate. This followed on recent attempts to restrict the wearing of veils and crosses.
The SNP's Cllr Bashir Ahmad spoke in the debate and his comments included:
- The important stance for every person in this great city is that of tolerance;
- Instead of seeking a narrow attitude to clothing and customs, we should seek to understand;
- Instead of being fearful about our own identity, we should be happy that so much is being added to that identity every day; and
- Distinctive communities have a place and role in this wonderful city which I am proud to call my home."
