Transport Museum costs spiralling
Friday, 27 October 2006
Glasgow tramFriday's Executive Committee heard how costs at the new Transport Museum are starting to spiral out of control. The building is having to be redesigned to cut costs and this has set alarm bells ringing. This is exactly what happened at the Easterhouse Cultural Campus, i.e. an innovative design, estimated costs coming in over budget, fundamental changes to the design, and finally major cost over-runs.

The SNP's John Mason argued that a ceiling must be fixed on the costs and the department, architects, and contractors told they had to live within that. He said, "The big fear is they will come back looking for more money and it will be essential projects like primary schools which will suffer. Much as we would like every building in Glasgow to be at the forefront of technology and a world leader, we need to get the basics right first. And for the SNP the priority is getting all our primary school children into safe and secure modern buildings."
