Too rigid enforcement of retiral age
Friday, 12 August 2005

It is disappointing that Council staff are still being forced to retire as soon as they hit 65.

Glasgow prides itself in trying to be an equal opportunities employer.   Slow advances have been made in a number of areas.   But it seems age discrimination is still alive and kicking.

The SNP’s John Mason said, “Policies have to be changed and I accept that cannot happen overnight.   However, ageism is not exactly an issue that has suddenly been sprung upon us.   My main criticism of the Council is how slow it is to respond to changes like this in society.   B & Q have been setting an example in this area for years.   It seems the Council cannot change any policy without having about 99 reports and consultations grinding their way through the bureaucratic system.   Surely it should be possible for a policy like this to be swiftly updated.
