Cllr John MasonAfter last June's protest about Labour's changes to committees in Glasgow, the Standards Commission is at long last to hold a hearing on Wednesday 7 March.

During the early part of 2006 the Labour Group on Glasgow City Council moved to increase their stranglehold on decision making. The key proposal was to change the membership of the main committee from 25 Labour and 4 opposition to 16 Labour and no opposition. In the face of losing both voice and vote before future decisions were made, SNP Group Leader John Mason protested by sitting in the Lord Provost's chair on 29 June. This disrupted the full Council meeting that day.

Now after lengthy investigations the Standards Commission will meet on Wednesday 7th to decide on the case. As most of the facts are agreed, the hearing is not expected to be a long one. John Mason's main argument is that although he had a duty to follow the rules in the Councillors' Code of Conduct, he had an even greater duty to defend the democratic system within the Council.

The meeting is open to the public and takes place at 9.30am in the Menzies Hotel, Washington Street, Glasgow.
