Scottish councillors call for Trident to be scrapped
Wednesday, 08 August 2007

Councillors at FaslaneWednesday was Scottish Councillors day at the year long Faslane 365 protest against the continued presence of Trident nuclear submarines at the Faslane Naval Base. The protestors included seven councillors from Glasgow City Council, all SNP, although the Green group had previously hoped to send a couple of councillors along. Councillors from West Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire were also present.

Cllr Craig Mackay, who organised the event said: "Many councils across Scotland have passed resolutions against Trident and its replacement, including Glasgow City Council, and given the inadequate funding for basic essential services like home helps, road repairs, street cleansing and recycling, there’s no council which would not be able to find a better use for their share of the billions of pounds currently being wasted on nuclear weapons.

"The Scottish people don’t want Trident, and only recently the Scottish Parliament affirmed its opposition to replacing these weapons of mass destruction too.

"In organising today's protest I have received messages of support from Green, Labour and SNP councillors from across the country."

The protest was also attended by members of Glasgow Young Scots for Independence.
