Cllr Billy McAllister at ChirnsydeWhen Billy McAllister was elected as SNP Councillor for Milton earlier this year, one of his main pledges was to get Chirnsyde Community Centre sorted out. And in recent months he has worked tirelessly to try and move this forward. But to say the Council has dragged its heels was to put it mildly. Attempts were constantly made to thwart Billy and when a review group was set up, they refused to let him have a place on it. The Council refused to accept there was a major problem at Chirnsyde even as the evidence mounted.

Now sadly this week Billy has been proven right. The violent death of any young man is a cause for sadness. And this week's death of one of the family who ran Chirnsyde is no exception. While the police obviously have to have solid evidence to bring a criminal case, the Council does not need to wait for that level of evidence before acting. The Council should be setting higher standards for those running community facilities. The lack of a criminal conviction should not be the only requirement.

Billy McAllister has welcomed the Council's belated decision to close Chirnsyde. Now he hopes the Council will reopen the facility under its own control before handing over to a new voluntary management committee in due course. Billy said, "While I welcome the closure, our community is desperately short of facilities. We need this centre reopened … but this time it must be properly managed."
