SPT misleads on costs
Sunday, 25 June 2006
On Friday 16 June a meeting of SPT (Strathclyde Partnership for Transport) heard how two of its most senior staff were "being retired". New Chief Executive, Ron Culley, reported there would be savings when Iain Wylie and Douglas Ferguson left. John Mason, the SNP councillor on SPT, along with LibDem councillors asked for more details on this but were only given vague answers. It now turns out that the cost of the early retirals is to be £440,000.

Opposition councillors now consider that they were misled at the meeting. There was no opportunity to compare the costs and benefits before a decision was made. The misleading report should have been stopped or corrected by SPT chair Alistair Watson who had presumably approved the report prior to the meeting.

Councillor John Mason said, "In Glasgow City Council we get clear details of both the costs and savings from early retirements. By contrast the SPT report was basically untrue by stating there was a saving but making no mention of any costs. We are presently considering how to take this forward."
