SNP welcomes new wards
Monday, 07 August 2006
The announcement that the Local Government Boundary Commission is recommending 21 wards for the City from next May has been welcomed by the SNP. With 16 four-member wards and 5 three-member, the total number of councillors will stay at 79. But minority parties should make big inroads into Labour's traditional majority on Glasgow City Council.

John Mason said, "We are pleased that the LGBC has stuck with mainly four-member wards. Although being a councillor in such a large ward will be a challenge, we have a great team of SNP candidates lined up to take on Labour. This is going to make sleepy Labour councillors sit up and take notice. We will be aiming to move from our present four councillors to at least a dozen. This will let us challenge Labour a lot more effectively in the City Chambers.

Of course it is because Labour are panicking over the new voting system that they are abolishing the committee system in the Council. This is not unsurprising but it is a total abuse of power. It flies in the face of the good intentions of the new voting system."

Notes

  • Four-member wards are more proportional as a candidate needs 20% (+1) to be elected. Three-member ward candidates need 25% (+1).
  • The largest wards will have an electorate of 25,000.
  • The final decision on the wards could be made on 13 September at the earliest.
