SNP councillor reported to Standards Commission
Monday, 31 July 2006

The SNP'S John Mason has been reported to the Standards Commission for disrupting the Council meeting on 29th June. On that date he had sat on the Lord Provost's chair in protest at Labour's abuse of power in the City Chambers. Labour in the Council are reducing the size of the main decision-making committee from 29 to 16 and are throwing all 4 opposition councillors off the committee in the process.

John Mason argues, "Although I normally agree that we should stick to the proper procedures, there does come a time when an issue is so fundamental that more action needs to be taken. In 8 years in the Council I have never done anything like this. But this was the first time Labour were attempting to stop us speaking and voting at committee. I felt I had to choose between defending basic democracy and following the Code of Conduct. So I am afraid on this occasion the Code of Conduct was the loser. I have no regrets and would certainly do the same again."
