Primary School Proposals
Friday, 07 October 2005
  1. We accept the general principle that maintaining lots of small schools does not make sense educationally or financially;
  2. We will need to examine the proposals on a case by case basis and listen to parents' views to see if we support or oppose individual plans.   It would appear that some quite large communities may be left without a school (or any other Council facility);
  3. We welcome the use of traditional financing methods including prudential borrowing rather than PFI/PPP.   This confirms that the use of PFI/PPP for the secondary schools in Glasgow was an expensive mistake.
  4. Despite proposals to spend £128 million on primary school buildings, all of this is being spent to replace or refurbish small schools.   Money should also be found for improving large popular continuing schools which are in a serious state of disrepair.
