Labour scared to make decision
Friday, 28 April 2006
saltireAt Education Committee on Thursday 27th school holidays for 2007/8 and 2008/9 were decided. The SNP proposed that St Andrew's Day should be one of the holidays.

Suddenly normally placid and sleepy Labour councillors sprang to life and argued with passion why Glasgow must not make such a decision.

Some of their efforts were bizarre: it wouldn't be safe for children (why?), it would be too disruptive for the schools, and such a decision should be made by the Scottish Executive. The last was particularly strange as the Labour administration normally argues that the Executive is taking their powers away and they want them back!

Of course, we knew why they really wouldn't support this. Any such idea of supporting Scotland as a nation is sure to raise the hackles of Labour and LibDems. In the end the unionist parties won the vote against the combined SNP and SSP plus one of the faith representatives.
