Labour plan cuts
Monday, 31 July 2006

It seems increasingly clear that the Labour controlled Council will hold a mini-budget with service cuts top of the agenda. As in the main budget earlier this year, they will say they are making savings but will actually make cuts that hit services. Examples earlier in the year included 20% reductions in classroom supplies in schools, fewer nursery teachers, wasp removal service cancelled, etc.

The new cuts will be required to fund the equal pay agreement.

The SNP supports the equal pay policy whereby women will be paid the same as men for doing equivalent jobs. However, the SNP does not accept that the Council (and therefore Glasgow residents) should be having to foot the entire bill. Central government in Edinburgh should also be helping with some of the costs, because:

  • The Scottish Government has underspent funds available; and
  • This is a national problem that could damage local services for years ahead if it is not dealt with properly.
John Mason, the SNP group leader on the Council said, "The Scottish Executive is well able to help local councils fund these equal pay settlements. It seems they are choosing not to do so in order to weaken local government and thereby centralise more power in their own hands. A lot of this is to do with infighting between factions in the Labour party and sadly local residents are going to be the losers. If major council assets are sold off as part of this process, it will be very difficult for the process to be reversed in future years."
