International workers memorial day to be marked in George Square
Friday, 27 April 2012

Glasgow SNP will remember the workers who have lost their lives as part of International Workers Memorial Day.

Glasgow SNP Councillor, Bailie John McLaughlin, has been part of a working party tasked with creating a memorial to workers who have been killed in the line of their work.

International Workers Memorial Day is an annual day of commemoration for those employees killed in the course of their work. An event is to be held in George Square this Saturday (28th April) to mark the day.

Bailie McLaughlin, who will be attending tomorrow’s event in George Square, said: ”It is a tragedy when anyone dies, but deaths at work are even harder to bear. Over many years, the safety and welfare of workers has been enshrined in law and regulation to prevent unnecessary deaths in the workplace. Sadly, the number of those who lose their lives at work is still too high.

“As employers, and representatives of the people of Glasgow, we councillors have to play our part to protect those who work in our name and to promote the sort of safe and healthy working environments which every employee should expect.

“I am proud to be part of a working party to create a memorial to those who have been killed in their workplace, to be located in George Square and unveiled in 2013”.
