Glasgow let down by Labour - disappointment as Labour hide from independent scrutiny
Thursday, 01 April 2010

Cllr James DornanThe SNP in Glasgow expressed their disappointment after Labour and Lib Dem Councillors voted to prevent independent scrutiny of recent allegations made about the handling of former Council leader Purcell's resignation and the practices at Glasgow's Arms length organisations.

Opposition leader and SNP Councillor James Dornan said: "Labour today had the chance to put their actions and the actions of the council they run up for independent scrutiny and they failed.

"If they have nothing to hide - as they repeatedly claimed - then why were they so scared of independent scrutiny.

"The reports in the media and the drip drip allegations of cronyism, party donations with public funds and a jobs for the Labour boys culture has damaged Glasgow.  The inquiry we were asking for would have given this council the chance to clear it's name and put all these issues beyond doubt.

"Instead Labour prefer to keep their business behind closed doors.

"The ridiculous situation of Cllr Watson - forced to resign over inappropriate expenses claims trying to defend his and Labour's actions was sheer farce.

"The people of Glasgow have been let down by Labour and their Lib Dem allies today.  However they can be assured the SNP will do everything in our power to ensure that these issues are properly investigated either within or outwith the council chambers."
